The Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) has announced an extension to the closing date for slot applications under the Network Statement, moving the deadline from 7 February to 27 February 2025.

This decision, made in consultation with the Interim Rail Economic Regulatory Capacity (IRERC), comes in response to requests from potential Train Operating Companies (TOCs) and various access seekers who required additional time to finalise their submissions in accordance with the revisions introduced in the updated Network Statement.

TRIM’s recent updates, including an updated Annexure 29b and an Addendum to Section 4-10, feature significant changes that enhance capacity allocation and transformation principles within the rail sector.

Notably, the revisions include provisions for the full utilisation of all slots across the network, while also clarifying equity-based access options tailored specifically for emerging operators.

By extending the application deadline, TRIM aims to ensure that applicants have ample opportunity to align their proposals with the revised application criteria.

The organisation’s commitment to fostering a fair, competitive, and transparent slot allocation process is evident, as this initiative is designed to promote increased participation in the rail sector.

The extension not only seeks to enhance the overall quality of applications but also encourages both established companies and new market entrants to engage more actively in the process.

As South Africa’s rail infrastructure evolves to meet contemporary challenges, TRIM’s actions signify a crucial step towards inclusivity and innovation within the industry.

By facilitating broader participation, TRIM hopes to reshape the rail hierarchy and create a more vibrant economic landscape in which all players can thrive.
