THOUSANDS of wine, food, and music lovers are expected to flock to Gugulethu at the weekend for the Wine and Lifestyle Festival, which kicks off at the Gugulethu Sports Stadium on Friday.
Selfie queens and kings also stand a chance to win R1 000 in a Cape Times competition.
The event runs until Sunday, with more than 60 different types of wine to taste from some of South Africa’s best-loved wine brands.
Festival organisers said they were expecting more than 1 000 people to attend on Friday.
“We have had a number of meetings around security. We will have a team of 80 security guards during the day and at night. There will be no under-18s allowed,” said Gugulethu Wine and Lifestyle organiser Clare Mack.
The SABMiller marquee will showcase different beers, and there will be food and beer pairings. Vendors in the Food Truck Village will be offering a variety of snacks and food.
Mack said all logistics were in place for the three-day event. She said that at least 6 000 people were expected to attend.
The festival also created a number of employment opportunities for Gugulethu residents, she said.
“The weather this weekend promises to be good. This year’s festival is completely different to what it used to be like in the past.
“We want people to come and spend a few hours with us. That is why we have different activities taking place,” said Mack.
She said there would be a competition for the best dressed woman, where participants stand a chance to win a grand prize of R30 000.
The Cape Times will also be running a competition during the event. Visit the Cape Times stand at the festival and stand the chance of winning R1 000 in cash.
All you need to do is to take a selfie in the Cape Times’ front-page poster booth, post it either on Facebook or Twitter and tag the Cape Times. A winner will be chosen for each of the three days.
Tickets cost R120 and VIP tickets R450. Tickets will also be available at the gate.
