Durban — Two people were killed in a crash a day after six people had killed in another motor vehicle accident.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Chantell Botha said that on Saturday night the service responded to reports of a collision on the R61 near Glenmore.

Botha said that, when emergency services arrived, they found that two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that two patients had sustained serious injuries and two patients had sustained minor injuries,” Botha said.

She said the patients were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment.

“Sadly, two occupants sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived,” Botha said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated by Port Edward police after two people died in an accident and others were seriously wounded.

KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said that on Friday night paramedics responded to the scene of a serious crash on the R56 in uMzimkhulu in southern KZN, where there had been a crash involving a truck and a light motor vehicle.

Initially, Mckenzie reported that five people had been killed in the crash, but an update revealed that the death toll had risen to six.

Paramedics treated and stabilised two patients at the scene before transporting them to the hospital for continued medical care, Mckenzie said.

KZN Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka conveyed his condolences to a family who lost six of their members in a head-on collision with a truck on the R56 outside uMzimkhulu.

Hlomuka explained that six occupants in the Avanza, who are all members of the Tenza family, died, while one sustained critical injuries and was recovering in hospital. The family were travelling from Nokweja to Flagstaff.

The department said the SAPS collision unit was leading an investigation into the possible cause of the accident.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation tweeted that a truck and trailer and a Toyota Avanza had been involved in a head-on crash that resulted in six confirmed fatalities. The cause of the crash was unknown and would be subject to an ongoing investigation.

Hlomuka called on all road users to respect traffic regulations.

He said this as the country approaches the festive season holidays which are synonymous with fatal road crashes.

On Friday, Hlomuka launched an Integrated Festive Season plan, which seeks to promote safety on the road and in communities.

“The success of this plan is dependent on the proactive work by law enforcement to reduce road crashes and levels of crime in our communities,” said Hlomuka.
