Seasoned actor Sdumo Mtshali recently took to X to share a heartfelt post reflecting on his journey as an actor.
With a career spanning over a decade, Mtshali has starred in different dramas and telenovelas, most notably as Donga on “My Brother’s Keeper”.
In his post on X, the award-winning actor expressed his deepest gratitude to God, acknowledging Him as his helper and guiding light throughout his career. He humbly recognised that without God's presence in his life, he would not have achieved the success he enjoys today.
Born in Durban, the 42-year-old actor had always dreamed of becoming an actor. He pursued his passion at the Durban University of Technology before taking a chance on the SABC1 reality competition, "Class Act", in 2010.
The reality TV show, produced by Curious Pictures and OwenKessel, ran for two seasons and featured contestants from across the country competing for a contract with a leading actor's agent, an eight-week course at the New York Film Academy School of Film and Acting, and a role in a TV commercial.
His decision to enter the competition proved to be a turning point in his career. The final two in the competition were Mtshali and Muzi Ngwenya. Mtshali won the competition, earning himself an eight-week acting course at the New York Film Academy.
This opportunity opened doors for the former “Isibaya” actor, landing him his first leading role in the SABC1 drama series, Intersections, in 2010.
He became a star after this recognition, appearing in several popular dramas, such as “Rhythm City”, where he played the role of Maidi Kotwe, a married medical student involved in a torrid love triangle, and “Tempy Pushers”, a drama series set in the glamorous fashion world juxtaposed with the vibrant township culture of South Africa.
However, it was his role as Sbu Ndlovu in the Mzansi Magic telenovela "Isibaya" that truly cemented him as a household name.
Reflecting on his journey, Mtshali said, “Today marks 15 years, thank you God. Lord, thank You for all the hope I can have in You. You are my helper, and You are the One Who intercedes on my behalf.
"I therefore have nothing to fear, and there is no condemnation, because my life is in You. In Jesus Christ's name, Amen.”
