“Umjolo: The Gone Girl” will be the first movie to premiere as part of Netflix South Africa’s first-ever film collection.
Set to drop on the streaming platform on November 8, it will be the first of four productions, which “invites audiences to the world of ‘Mjoloville’”.
“Umjolo serves up four captivating films that explore the unique love lives of four women as they navigate the complexities of relationships, commitment and self-discovery,” a statement read.
“A new tantalising film will drop each month from November to February, revealing a different chapter in each woman’s journey.”
All these movies are produced by the award-winning production company, Stained Glass, which has been at the forefront of iconic South African television shows for a decade.
Meanwhile, “Umjolo: The Gone Girl” boasts an impressive roster of veteran talents, including Baby Cele, Meshack Mavuso, Gugu Gumede and Ntando Mncube.
The rest of the cast includes Sibongiseni Shezi, Tyson Mathonsi, Sibusisiwe Jili, Londeka Sishi, Thobeka Shangase, Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi and Tina Redman.
In addition, South African MC and content creator, Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi, will bring his signature blend of wit and charm to the screen as the film’s narrator.
It follows Lethu (Shezi), an event-planner maestro and hopeless romantic who seems to have it all.
She is the successful owner of her own business and is surrounded by a supportive network of family and friends.
She is also dating the “perfect man” Lucky (Mathonsi), who is loving, supportive, attentive and attractive. And when they get engaged, she is on top of the world
But Lethu’s life takes a tumultuous turn when she contracts a sexually transmitted infection, exposing her fiancé's cheating.
This shatters the illusion of her perfect relationship and she leans on her friends Amanda (Shangase), Zanele (Jili) and Thoko (Sishi) for support.
“Now at a crossroads, Lethu is trapped in heartbreakville, unable to break free from the emotional turmoil,” the statement added.
