While those of us who like to be truly M Powered are no doubt waiting with baited breath for BMW to pull the covers off of the all-new M6, the company is whetting our appetites for now with the revealing of the M Sport Package and a hot diesel.
THE M LOOK:
As with other M Sport packages in the BMW range, this one doesn't bring anything resembling M power to the range, but it does create a look that almost befits the performance flagship.
The external package features an M aerodynamics kit, LED fog lights and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels with a double-spoke design. Inside, buyers are treated to sports seats with an Alcantara/leather combination and an M leather steering wheel.
BMW is also selling an 'Individual' package, offering some bespoke paint and wheel choices along with some tantalising interior options.
DASHING DIESEL:
Another range addition is what BMW calls the world's sportiest diesel. Available in both Coupe and Convertible body styles, the 640d uses a six-cylinder commonrail diesel engine with TwinPower turbo technology in the form of sequential turbocharging.
There are no jokes on the output front, the 3-litre motor producing 230kW at 4400rpm and 630Nm between 1500 and 2500rpm. This is enough, claims BMW, to push it from 0-100km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.6 in the case of the convertible), while fuel claimed combined fuel consumption amounts to just 5.4 and 5.5 litres per 100km respectively. This results in CO2 emissions of between 143 and 145g/km.
These models also have an Eco Pro mode, which is effectively the opposite of an 'M' button - this function adjusting the accelerator mapping, shift characteristics and climate control to allow maximum efficiency.
X FACTOR:
BMW is also offering all-wheel drive in the latest 6 Series Coupe and Convertible, the xDrive system now available in the 650i, which is powered by a 300kW TwinPower turbopetrol motor.
While the 6 Series Convertible is already on sale in South Africa, you can expect the Coupe to reach our shores around September.
