The first pictures of the new-generation MG4 electric hatchback have surfaced online, via China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
While the current MG4 is more conservative than striking, the new model takes clear inspiration from the firm’s gorgeous Cyberster roadster.
The MG4 has yet to be officially confirmed for the South African market. However, a dealer source told IOL earlier this year that the electric hatchback was in the planning for our market in 2025.
With a length of 4,395mm, it is significantly bigger than the current model, making it larger than BYD’s Dolphin but slightly smaller than its Atto 3.
Car News China reports that the redesigned MG4 will be powered by a new electric motor that produces 120kW, and although that’s 5kW less than the current version musters, the vehicle’s kerb weight has been reduced, rather impressively, from 1,641kg to 1,485kg.
The publication reports that the vehicle has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, although its capacity has yet to be announced. The current MG4 is offered in 51 kWh, 64 kWh and 77 kWh guises, with claimed range figures of between 350km and 530km.
MG, which is owned by Chinese auto giant SAIC, launched in South Africa in January, with the ZS and HS SUVs, as well as the Cyberster roadster.
The line-up is set to be expanded this year with the release of the new-generation MG3 hatchback and ZS Pro SUV.
At launch, SAIC South Africa’s Network and Strategy Director, Ian Nicolls said that within 18 months the brand would have representation in all of the major passenger car segments in South Africa.
It plans to have 60 dealerships in operation by the end of 2025.
