Four suspects are behind bars after a lightning-fast police response to a violent armed robbery in Sandton that saw luxury watches worth R200,000 stolen from e-hailing passengers.
The arrests were made through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and private security companies under the Eyes and Ears (E2) project.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said that the suspects targeted two victims on March 17 while they were en-route to a hotel in Sandton.
"An Audi vehicle cut in front of the e-hailing car and robbed them at gunpoint. Their valuables, including branded watches to the value of approximately R200,000 were also robbed," said Nevhuhulwi.
Later the same day, police, in collaboration with a private security company, followed up on intelligence that led them to four suspects.
"They were found in possession of two firearms with filed-off serial numbers, the two branded watches and two vehicles (Audi and Toyota) both fitted with false registration numbers," Nevhuhulwi confirmed.
All four suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.
