Police at Ohrigstad, under the Sekhukhune district in Limpopo, have arrested four men aged between 28 and 44 for possession of a motor vehicle which was reported stolen in Giyani.

Provincial police spokesperson in Limpopo, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, said the four accused men have appeared before the Ohrigstad Magistrate’s Court. The suspects, identified as Phetulo Mokgathi, 44; Isaac Maponya, 61; Simbarashe Jamonoca, 38, and Trigers Chaminuka, 28, were remanded in custody until Wednesday, for further profiling. 

“The arrests follow an intelligence-driven operation conducted on Sunday afternoon, March 23 2025. Information was received by Ohrigstad SAPS members regarding a motor vehicle allegedly stolen in the Giyani policing area earlier this month,” said Mashaba.

“Acting swiftly, the police activated the intelligence operation, resulting in the successful interception of the vehicle with four male occupants.”

He said the four occupants of the vehicle were immediately taken into custody and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. 

The police have seized the vehicle as part of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the law enforcement team “for their swift action and dedication to combating crime in the province”.

Last week, IOL reported that a 44-year-old police officer, based in Gauteng was arrested in Limpopo after he was found in possession of nyaope drugs and driving a suspected stolen vehicle.

The police officer was intercepted on Wednesday while driving along the N1 South freeway, outside Polokwane, according to Mashaba.

“The police constable from Silverton detectives component was found in possession of 2,095 sachets of nyaope, worth approximately R85,000 and was driving a suspected stolen Nissan NP200 with Gauteng registration plates,” he said. 

“The vehicle was intercepted near Shell Ultra City during an intelligence-driven operation by the provincial anti-smuggling unit, jointly with Tshimollo private security.”

The police officer was armed with his service pistol, which was confiscated during his arrest.
