KwaZulu-Natal police arrested two Nigerian nationals after they were allegedly found in possession of drugs in Port Shepstone.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, arrested the men after working with Counter Narcotics, Crime Intelligence, Port Shepstone K9, Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team as well as the Scottburgh Visible Policing.

The men, Chima Ihekwoaba, 44, and Uchechukwu Mbaogu, 26, were arrested after Hawks members received information about a group of suspects who were dealing in drugs at Park Rynie near Scottburgh.

The Hawks said they conducted numerous undercover operations and managed to profile the suspects.

"Yesterday (Thursday), a takedown operation was conducted and the two were arrested. During the operation police seized various types of drugs including rock cocaine, CAT and crystal math to the street value of approximately R8,700," said the Hawks.

The Hawks members also seized R38,450 which is suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

"Seized cash will be referred to the Asset Forfeiture Investigation for further handling," Hawks said.

The duo made their first appearance in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Friday, and they were remanded in custody.

The case was postponed to December 30, 2024.

In another similar matter, a 41-year-old police Sergeant attached to the Anti-Gang Unit and his female accomplice,32, were served with summons to appear before the Hennenman Magistrates Court for alleged possession of drugs.

Free State police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli said they were re-arrested by the Welkom Serious Organised Crime Investigation detectives on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

"On May 11, 2023, the Hawks executed a search warrant at the Sergeant's place of residence in Hennenman. He was found in the company of a female. Upon searching, 14 tablets of mandrax were found. Both suspects were released pending a forensic report," said Mohobeleli.

The officers will appear in court on January 15, 2025.
