The City of Ekurhuleni has condemned the ongoing illegal strike by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) who are allegedly demanding salary adjustments.

The City has expressed concern over the strike, which has resulted in significant disruptions on key arterial routes in Gauteng on Wednesday morning.

Videos and pictures making rounds on social media show the metro police officers clad in their uniforms blocking vehicles.

Some were seen holding posters, stating, “Adjust our salaries or take your guns.”

The metro police officers took to the streets to block traffic.

City of Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the protest was severely affecting traffic on the R24 Westbound between the OR Tambo Interchange and Electron Interchange, resulting in heavy delays.

“Additionally, protests are impacting all lanes of the N3 Northbound between Heidelberg and Elands, causing extensive traffic congestion,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini condemned the protest, stating that it compromises public safety and disrupts the daily commute of thousands of residents and visitors.

“The City is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to resolve the situation swiftly,” he said.

Dlamini urged motorists to exercise patience, seek alternative routes where possible, and remain vigilant.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and assure residents that the City is committed to restoring normal traffic flow and stability as soon as possible,” he said.

Dlamini said further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.

Meanwhile, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) warned of significant traffic delays on major routes leading to the airport due to the ongoing EMPD industrial section.

Affected roads include the R21 Southbound between Bapsfontein Rd & OR Tambo Interchange, N3 North, and N17.

ACSA advised passengers to avoid disruptions by arriving at the airport earlier than usual to avoid missing flights, plan alternative routes and allow extra travel time and stay updated on real-time traffic conditions through navigation apps or official transport channels.

EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato added that the N17, R21, N3, N12 and R24 are clear for now.
