Four people were killed in a mass shooting incident in a tavern on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Monday night. 

According to IPSS Security and IPSS Medical Rescue, they responded to reports of a shooting incident inside a tavern in Sundumbili.

Spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said a total of eight people were shot during the incident.

"Three people including an off-duty SAPS member died on scene." 

"Five patients were rushed to a Sundumbili clinic, about 100m away. Sadly, a second off-duty SAPS member passed away shortly after arrival."

Meyrick said the remaining four victims sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.

"They were stabilized on scene by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support and clinic staff and transported to a more suitable facility for further care."

Meyrick said the motive behind the attack is unknown and will be subject to further investigation.

"Our condolences go out to the deceased's friends, family, and colleagues."
