After spending more than a month in jail, Durban businessman Ferrel Govender was dealt another blow when he was denied bail for the murder of Shailen Singh.

In his ruling Magistrate, Kevin Broughton found that Govender had the propensity to threaten witnesses and had an attitude of 'being above the law'

Broughton said that evidence brought before the court also suggested that Ferrel said he was connected to high-ranking people and 'cannot be touched'.

The 40-year-old CEO of Pro-Secure is accused of killing Singh,32, in a parking lot in Umhlanga on December 29, 2024.

The State alleges that the motive for the murder was due to a love triangle- Singh had been having an affair with Ferrel's girlfriend.

In contrast, Magistrate Broughton found that Darren was unlikely to evade trial and granted him R200,000 bail.

The State had asked that bail be set at R1million.

In earlier court proceedings the State argued that if Darren was released on bail he could be an 'extended arm' for his brother.

As part of his bail conditions, Darren was ordered not to apply for new travel documents, not to interfere with State witnesses, which included Singh's wife and father, and to report to a police station twice daily.

The Magistrate told him should he fail to appear in court, a warrant for his arrest would be issued and his bail would be forfeited to the State.

Outside court, Ferrel's business partner and close friend Sandesh Mootheram told IOL that they would be appealing the decision in the High Court.

He said Ferrel played an active role in the lives of his three children.

"They miss him, especially his six-year-old son who is very close to him."

Pradeep Singh, Shailen's father said while they were happy with the court proceedings to date, the reality is they would never get their son back.

Singh's wife declined to comment.

The matter will return to court in May for further investigation.

Ferrel was remanded at Westville Prison.
