Pretoria - The EFF Student Command at the University of Limpopo has been elected to lead the Student Representative Council (SRC) in a crushing defeat of ANC-aligned South African Student Congress (Sasco) this week.

The student movement won 13 out of 17 seats during the SRC elections with a walloping 9 466 votes. Sasco only got three seats, with 1 966 votes.

The new structure of the SRC will be led by Vincent Makamu as president and Kgaogelo Nkabinde as deputy president.

Kgamogelo Wesley Tshantsha was elected secretary, Joy Maphoku Tjaji as deputy secretary and Mpho Manteke Ramodike as treasurer.

Political analyst Sise Majola insists that EFF’s victory in the previously Sasco stronghold says a lot about the ANC’s loss of power in the run-up to the general election in 2024.

Speaking to Pretoria News yesterday, Majola said: “An era of coalitions has come in the country while the ANC continues to lose its grip to power. “If a student movement like Sasco loses elections in this manner… and the results continue in this manner it means they are going to lose elections through coalition in 2024.”

The EFF Student Command also performed strongly at Tshwane University of Technology Polokwane Campus and the University of Limpopo. SRC elections continue throughout the country. The EFF in Limpopo congratulated its student wing, saying the movement was securing a solid footprint in campus politics.

“The EFF Student Command continues to make tremendous impact at many institutions of higher learning, including where it secured a solid footprint by winning the hearts and mind of students with large margins.

“The first duty of a revolutionary is to be educated as Che Guevara said, and accordingly the EFF Student Command must strive for the realisation of socialism through students’ power and the establishment of an education system that responds to the needs of its students.

“Moreover, the EFF Student Command must pursue a radical higher education transformation with the aim of achieving sound democratic socialist values where the leadership is accountable to the membership which elected it.

“We are proud of the existence and achievements of the movement, hence we urge all the students in other institutions of higher learning including TVET colleges to mobilise others behind the struggle for economic freedom embodied in the EFF founding manifesto.

“Students must vote for the EFF Student Command because it is a generation that is not going to bow at the table of white supremacy for existence, but serve the students to the end,” the statement said.
