Operation Shanela is making waves in the fight against crime as authorities continue to dismantle criminal networks. In a recent sweep across the rural precincts of Ekangala and Bronkhorstspruit, 351 suspects were apprehended, and an unlicensed firearm was seized, marking another significant victory for law enforcement.

The operation’s success was driven by Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, with careful planning aimed at maximizing its impact. It resulted in the apprehension of wanted suspects, boosted visible policing through the strategic deployment of additional resources and officers, and enforced compliance with liquor regulations in the targeted areas.

Captain Johan Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District Police, reported that the operation, which took place on Saturday, led to the arrest of 258 suspects by Tshwane Detectives. The offences included 88 cases of gender-based violence, 33 of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four for murder, three for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and two for rape.

Additionally, 17 undocumented individuals were detained and are currently awaiting legal processing for deportation.

He further explained that a roadblock was set up in Ekangala, where both individuals and vehicles were searched. This led to the arrest and fining of 29 individuals for drinking in public.

“686 individuals and 319 vehicles were searched, with nine vehicles undergoing verification to determine if they were reported stolen. 29 individuals were arrested and fined for drinking in public, four persons were arrested and fined for public intoxication, with 28 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

Traffic enforcement resulted in 22 AARTO infringement notices, totaling R13,750, for Road Traffic Act violations.

Van Dyk said that officers also carried out compliance raids and law enforcement operations across the district, resulting in inspections of 15 establishments. Six were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act, and 289 600 ml of alcohol was confiscated.

He further stated that in Bronkhorstspruit, a person of interest was placed under surveillance. After obtaining a search warrant, law enforcement officers searched the suspect's residence and recovered an unlicensed firearm.

“During an intelligence-driven operation in Bronkhorstspruit, a person of interest was placed under surveillance. With a search warrant, law enforcement officers searched the suspect’s residence, leading to the recovery of an unlicensed firearm, two rounds of ammunition, and a magazine. The suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he said.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect is connected to other criminal activities. The firearm will also undergo forensic testing to establish any links to previous crimes.
