A targeted crackdown on illegal mining by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has led to the arrest of five undocumented foreign nationals found operating at mine shafts in Germiston, Duduza, and KwaThema.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 45, were apprehended by EMPD Intervention Unit Officers during operations conducted between Monday, April 14 and Sunday, April 19, 2025.

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts to combat the growing threat of illegal mining across the city.

Illegal mining equipment including phendukas and gas cylinders seized by EMPD officers during a crackdown in Germiston, Duduza and KwaThema.

Officers seized several pieces of illegal mining equipment during the raids, including phendukas and gas cylinders.

The suspects face charges related to illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.

They are expected to appear in court soon.
