FOLLOWING the Pretoria Capitals’ six-wicket victory at home over Joburg Super Kings this week – one in which they made five changes to their playing XI – they head into today’s must-win encounter against MI Cape Town (5.30pm start) with positive momentum on their side.

One of the newer editions to the playing XI, debutant and fast bowler Gideon Peters, had a dream start to his SA20 career.

The 25-year-old was picked up by the Capitals for his raw pace, and boy did the youngster put his talents on display at SuperSport Park in his debut, claiming sparkling figures of 2/15, helping the Capitals bowl out the Super Kings for 99 runs.

“I can’t say the words that were going through my mind... I just couldn’t go back to bed when I got the message, and that whole night, I didn’t sleep at all,” said Peters.

“The next morning, when I rocked up at the hotel, I was so tired but excited as well, because you watch this amazing tournament on TV – and you think to yourself that you would like to have a crack at it. And to be a part of it was just amazing. I was so excited.”

Peters lauded captain Kyle Verreynne and his vice Will Jacks for their calming words on what was a big occasion for the quick.

“Our captain Kyle and Jacksy told me that it was my first game, and I had nothing to lose, just go out there and enjoy yourself, and do what you can do and bowl as quick as you can. If it comes off, it comes off – if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” said Peters.

“There was, of course, a bit of nerves because you know what was at stake.

“But we also said that at the end of the day, you cannot control the results. You can only control your energy and the mood you put out.

“And that was what we focused on. Let’s enjoy our last couple of games, and hopefully we can put out some nice results.”

After such an impressive debut, the fast bowler will most likely get another crack this evening as MI Cape Town make the trip to Centurion.

The 25-year-old will be add important element in the Capitals’ pace attack as they try to keep their playoffs ambitions alive with a victory tonight.
