Starting from January 1, 2025, Android devices running the KitKat operating system (OS) or older versions will no longer be able to support social media platform, WhatsApp. This change will affect users with android phones that are nine to 10-years-old.
According to WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, this decision is aimed at improving security and app functionality.
WhatsApp's constantly evolving innovations such as encryption updates, multi-device support, new video calling features and AI functionalities, etc., require more modern hardware and software. As technology advances, older devices struggle to support new features and can't protect user data effectively.
Without software and security updates, these phones become more vulnerable to cyber threats, and app functionality is reduced. As a result, the following older model android devices will be getting axed:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.
While Android users face an immediate cut-off, older model iPhone users have until May 5, 2025 to update their software because WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS 15.1 or lower.
This means iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users will need to upgrade their devices or update to a newer iOS version to continue using the app.
This is not the first time that WhatsApp has dropped support for older devices, and similar changes have been made for both Android and iOS users in the past.
Users with these older smartphones are encouraged to back-up all WhatsApp chats to a Google account ahead of the cut-off date to ensure that messages and media can be easily restored to a new or upgraded device.
