The topped-shot is one of the most frustrating errors in golf, resulting in a low-flying shot that often rolls or skids along the ground. It's a common issue that can plague golfers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. In this golf segment, we'll explore the causes of the topped shot, provide potential cures, and offer drills to help you overcome this frustrating error.

Before we dive into the cures, it's essential to understand what causes the topped-shot. Here are some common culprits:

Incorrect ball position: When the ball is positioned too far back in your stance, it can lead to a topped-shot.

Inadequate ball striking: Striking the ball with the top half of the clubhead can result in a topped shot.

Insufficient loft: Using a club with too little loft can make it difficult to get the ball airborne, leading to a topped shot.

Swing plane issues:  A steep swing plane or striking the ball with a descending blow can also cause a topped shot.

Now that we've identified the causes, let's explore some potential cures:

Check ball position:  Make sure the ball is positioned slightly forward in your stance.

Focus on ball striking: Practice striking the ball with the centre of the clubhead.

Choose the correct club: Select a club with adequate loft for the shot you're attempting.

Adjust the swing plane: Practice a shallower swing plane or striking the ball with an ascending blow.

Slow down swing: Reduce your swing speed to improve control.

Practice is key to overcoming the topped shot. Here are some drills to help you improve your ball striking and cure the topped shot:

Tee drill: Place a ball on a tee, and focus on striking the ball with the center of the clubhead.

Impact bag drill: Practice striking an impact bag with the clubhead to improve your ball striking.

Slow-motion drill: Practice swinging at a slow speed to improve control.

By understanding the causes of the topped shot and practicing the cures and drills outlined above, you can overcome this frustrating error and improve your overall golf game. Remember to be patient and persistent, as curing the topped shot takes time and practice. Catch you on the fairways!
