The vibrant coastal city of Durban took centre stage in the much-anticipated film, “A Wesley South African Christmas” which premièred on Saturday, December 21 on BET Africa (DStv channel 129).
The heartwarming movie served as the final chapter of the beloved “Wesley Christmas” trilogy.
The festive film not only celebrated the magic of Christmas but also highlighted Durban’s stunning landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage, cementing the city’s position as a prime film and tourism hub.
EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba said, “The filming of this Hollywood production in Durban showcases our city's breathtaking scenery and rich cultural tapestry.
“As a growing hub for film tourism, Durban offers filmmakers and visitors an unforgettable blend of spectacular backdrops, warm hospitality, and diverse heritage.”
Xaba highlighted the collaboration between the eThekwini Municipality and BET as not just a celebration of the joys of the holiday season but also as a vital showcase of Durban’s potential as a cultural epicentre.
“By integrating our unique stories into global narratives, we reinforce Durban’s position as a must-visit destination for creatives and tourists alike, ensuring that our city remains a beacon of culture, innovation, and artistic expression,” added Xaba.
The film brought together top South African and American talent, further highlighting the strength of the cross-cultural exchange between Hollywood and the vibrant South African film industry.
The stellar cast included American stars Dorien Wilson, Judi Johnson, TC Carson, and Jasmine Guy, alongside South African A-listers Nkosinathi “Nay Maps” Maphalala, Dineo Langa, Jesse Suntele, Baby Cele, Bohang Moeko, and Trevor Gumbi.
Behind the scenes, more than 450 South Africans contributed their expertise to the project.
According to the statement, the film was crafted as a love letter to Africa, acknowledging the traditions and narratives uniting African-American and South African cultures.
Executive producers Bree and Chuck West expressed their admiration for working with South African artists, with West sharing that the collaboration with South African talent has been an inspiring journey.
“This project is a testament to the strength of cultural exchange.”
Adding a uniquely local flavour, Maphalala performed the film’s vibrant title track, an upbeat, festive Afro-Beat inspired anthem that promises to get audiences moving.
Fans of the film have also been encouraged to join the excitement through a TikTok dance challenge linked to the song.
According to Monde Twala, senior vice president and general manager of Paramount Africa and Lead at BET International, the film underscores South Africa’s creative capabilities.
“It bridges continents and communities, spotlighting the richness of our culture on the international stage.”
