A police detective appeared in the Sasolburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for allegedly shooting and critically wounding his wife.
Detective Warrant Officer Amos Mlangeni, 43, from the Sasolburg police, had been charged with attempted murder, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said.
The matter was postponed to Wednesday for a bail application. ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini said Mlangeni allegedly shot and critically wounded his wife, Ntombizodwa, 39, at their home around midnight on Saturday.
The policeman apparently shot her twice in the head with his service pistol after she returned home with their four-year-old daughter. Dlamini said it was not known what provoked the shooting.
Mlangeni apparently went to his neighbours to ask for help in taking his wife to the Medi-Clinic in Vereeniging, where she was currently receiving medical attention.
The ICD was notified and Mlangeni arrested. - Sapa
