Smithfield - A policeman filmed allegedly beating a woman at a Smithfield petrol station will be charged, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Thursday.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Free State has agreed with the recommendations of Ipid that Warrant Officer Ernest Maratshane should be prosecuted for assault,” spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

The DPP had decided that Maratshane should be prosecuted on two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, he said in a statement.

Maratshane would appear in the Smithfield Magistrate's Court on July 4.

“Since the victim refused to co-operate with the investigation, the DPP has decided that she is a compellable witness,” Dlamini said.

Security footage filmed on April 5 and later broadcast on eNCA, showed a man striking and kicking a woman to the ground at a petrol station.

Two uniformed officers allegedly allowed the man to leave the scene without arresting him. - Sapa
