Smithfield - The case against a Free State police officer filmed beating a woman was postponed in the Smithfield Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Ernest Maratshane's case was postponed because he did not yet have legal representation, Free State National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Phaladi Shuping said.

The matter would be back in court on July 25.

Security footage filmed on April 5, and later broadcast on eNCA, showed a plain-clothed man striking and kicking a woman at a petrol station. Two uniformed officers allegedly allowed him to leave the scene without arresting him.

The director of public prosecutions (DPP) agreed with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's recommendation that the warrant officer be prosecuted for assault.

The DPP decided that he be prosecuted on two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. - Sapa
