Cops intensify hunt for Welkom farm killers

Johannesburg – Police in Welkom on Tuesday said they had mounted an “intensive manhunt” for suspects who shot at a couple on a farm and left them for dead. The husband succumbed to his injuries, but his wife survived.

“She was crying the whole night until she was discovered by one of the farm worker the following day when he reported for duty,” said the police.

Police said the worker, who found the injured woman, sought help from Harcos farm. Police from Odendaalsrus attended the scene.

The assailants made off with valuable items.

Police said items stolen from the couple included two 9mm pistols, jewellery, a red ladies purse with cash inside, a silver medal, which was engraved with the initials JC] and a silver medal of the Second World War with the Free State Emblem, as well as a wrist watch and other valuables.

Police said the robbery occured on 19 November 2015 when Jan Christiaan Barnard and his wife, Cornelia Elizabeth Barnard, were attacked at their farm house in Palmietkuil Odendaalsrus district.

The Hawks in Welkom, under the leadership of the investigation team led by Detective Sergeant Scala Vinger, have intensified the manhunt for the suspects.
