Free State police were on Tuesday investigating a case of reckless driving after a bus with more than 70 people overturned, injuring several passengers.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Majang Skalkie said the accident happened on the R70, about two kilometres outside Rosendal in the Eastern Free State, at about 11.30pm on Monday.
The bus was carrying 72 people and four children, and was on its way to Joburg from Ficksburg.
No one died in the accident, said Skalkie.
She said the driver told police that a tyre had burst and he lost control of the bus before it overturned.
Earlier, paramedics said they found two occupants trapped in the wreckage.
They were freed by technicians using hydraulic equipment.
“The other injured passengers had clambered from the upended bus and were found near it,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks.
He said 10 people were in a serious condition and the remaining 60 were classified as walking wounded, having sustained only minor injuries.
Skalkie said the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were taken to the Dihlabeng, Senekal and Ficksburg hospitals for further treatment. – Sapa
