Welkom – Free State police are on the hunt for two suspects who raped a schoolgirl at knifepoint in Welkom.
Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said: “On April 24, 2016, at about 2pm, a 17-year-old girl was [walking] from school when she was apparently approached by two young men who forced her to a mountain heap next to Bronville, Welkom at knife point.”
Thakeng said the suspects rummaged in her handbag and took the schoolgirl’s cellphone.
“She was threatened with a knife. She was repeatedly raped by one of the boys. She was left there and managed to walk home, where she reported the incident to her sisters who took her to the police,” said Thakeng.
“The two suspects are still at large and a manhunt has been launched,” Thakeng said.
He said: “One of the suspects, was wearing a blue plastic watch on his right arm with the name ‘PUMA’ in black. Their clothing were as follows: maroon sports hat, light green T-shirt, green track suit pants and white takkie shoes. The second suspect with a maroon long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, black and white All Star shoes.”
Thakeng said the police had compiled an identikit of one of the suspects and he called on members of the public who had information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest to contact Detective Sergeant Mabote Lebone of Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Crimes Unit at 082 885 2428 or 057 391 6187 during office hours.
