Ventersdorp - Four women appeared in the Ventersburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday for possession of dagga, Free State police said.

Sergeant Mamello Macheoane said they would be back in court on March 14 for bail application. They remained in custody.

Macheoane said police, acting on a tip off via 'WhatsApp' from an off duty police officer about women carrying dagga in a taxi, arrested them on the R70 on Wednesday. The vehicle was travelling from Senekal to Ventersburg.

WhatsApp is an instant messaging application available on smartphones.

“The constable was a passenger in the taxi and... he asked his colleague (via WhatsApp) if the Ventersburg police could do a stop and search on the R70 road between Senekal and Ventersburg,” she said.

A road block was set up and the vehicle was stopped. Police found nine bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R86 000.
