Bloemfontein - An employee of Tikwe Lodge at Virginia was killed during an early morning robbery, Free State police said on Tuesday.
“Virginia police were called to the lodge and found one of the employees, Tefo Capcan Mokheseng, 46, lying on the floor of the reception area with a gunshot to his head,” said Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane.
The man was certified dead at the scene by medical personnel at about 2am on Tuesday morning.
Mokhuoane said police also found a security guard tied up in the guard-house at the main gate.
Another guard managed to untie herself and phone police from the reception area after the robbery.
Police said it seemed about 16 robbers overpowered the two guards at the main gate.
They forced one of the guards, a woman, to ask the receptionist Mokheseng to open the lodge doors.
The robbers then rushed in and apparently shot Mokheseng in the head.
They ransacked the offices and stole a wall-mounted safe containing an undisclosed amount of money.
They also stole cigarettes from a vending machine, and liquor.
The robbers fled the scene after they tied-up the woman.
