Welkom - Free State police recovered on Friday morning groceries and a hairpiece allegedly meant for illegal miners in Welkom.
“(Police) were patrolling at the cattle kraals in Brand shaft mine two in Welkom when they saw a suspicious man holding a bag,” spokeswoman Molebogeng Lechesa said.
“When the man saw the police, he threw away the bag and fled on foot in the field. The members tried to give chase but without success.”
Lechesa said the black refuse bag contained chicken pieces, beans, cooking oil, macaroni, soup, washing powder, chips, biscuits, instant porridge and a hairpiece.
“We think the groceries were meant for illegal miners, because the incident happened in the precinct of the mine,” she said.
Lechesa said police could not immediately determine the reason why the man had a hairpiece.
