Father held for killing sons

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Petrus Steyn for allegedly murdering his two baby boys, Free State police said on Sunday.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said in a statement that the man allegedly fought with his 22-year-old wife just after midnight on Sunday morning. The wife fled with the couple's four-month-old baby, leaving behind the older boy.

The father allegedly stabbed the older boy, who was almost two-years-old, several times with a knife, killing him.

Mophiring said the man then followed his wife, who was fleeing to her parents' house. He caught up with her, grabbed the baby from her arms and threw him against the ground. The baby was killed instantly.

The man tried to run away after the incident, but was apprehended by the police and members of the community.

The mother was taken to hospital for treatement for shock. She has since been discharged.

The motive for the killings were not yet known. The man is expected to appear in court soon. - Sapa
