Johannesburg - The burial of Orania founder, Carel Boshoff, was underway in the Northern Cape on Saturday, the SABC reported.

Among the mourners was former Northern Cape premier, Manne Dipico.

The broadcaster reported that the community of Orania had come out in large numbers to bid farewell to the man they refer to as the 'father of Orania'.

Speaker after speaker showered Boshoff with praise for the role he played in the Orania community.

Boshoff, who was the son-in-law of former South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd will later be laid to rest in the Orania cemetery.

He founded Oranie in 1990 after he, and a number of Afrikaans families bought land which was a construction camp along the Orange River in the Northern Cape.

Orania, which is known to be populated by Afrikaners, was set up to maintain the vision of the population group's self determination. - Sapa
