Johannesburg - Five people, including a child, were killed in a head-on collision on the N1 outside Ventersburg on Monday, the Free State transport department said.
“The driver of a Mazda, who was alone in the car, tried to overtake at high speed and rammed into an oncoming Renault carrying four people,” spokesman Saki Mohono said.
“It appeared that the driver was impatient as the road in that area has been reduced to only two lanes due to roadworks.”
The accident happened at around 7am. All five died at the scene.
Mohono said the Renault rolled and hit another vehicle injuring five people.
The road had been cleared for traffic. - Sapa
