Five men appeared in the Botshabelo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a Free State policeman.

Police spokeswoman Constable Nomene Mokoale said the matter was postponed to February 28 for their bail applications.

The fifth man, Tshediso Mohapi, was arrested at the weekend.

Mohapi, 20, Teboho Tsomela, 22, Eletsang Sehlooho, 26, Motlatsi Tsomela, 21, and Moeketsi Lesupi, 21, each face a murder charge.

The body of detective constable John Shale, 32, was found in a furrow at W-section, near Moshongoville, in Botshabelo, on February 11, 2012.

Police investigations led to the arrest of three of the men only hours later. Another man was arrested a day later.

Mokoale said Shale was shot in the head when he stopped to give five men a lift home. Police seized Shale's service pistol, cellphone and tracksuit top at the house of one of the men. - Sapa
