Johannesburg - Joburgers and those in other parts of the country are urged to exercise caution as heavy downpours which could cause possible flooding are expected.
The SA Weather Service (SAWS) said on Thursday morning that there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the North West as well as the eastern parts of the Free State.
Forecaster Lulama Pheme said that this could cause localised flooding on Thursday and Friday, when there is a 60 percent chance of showers.
“With severe thundershowers, anything is possible.”
She added that while there is also significant rainfall forecast for Friday, the showers were most likely in the afternoon.
Downpours are expected to subside by the weekend, when a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers are expected on Saturday and no rainfall expected on Sunday.
Temperatures from Thursday to early next week in Gauteng are expected to peak in the mid to high 20s.
“We are expecting cloudy to warm conditions in the next few days in Johannesburg and Pretoria.”
Heavy weather conditions hit parts of Gauteng in recent weeks, causing havoc on the roads and destroying people’s homes.
Last week, a tornado struck Ennerdale, south of Joburg, causing damage to a number of houses in the area.
Joburg Emergency spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said at the time that 53 houses were assessed and that most of them damaged roofs and collapsed walls.
One person was also injured at the time and had to be hospitalised.
Meanwhile, seven people were killed in flash floods around Johannesburg in recent weeks.
