Bloemfontein - An investigation into a multi-million rand Free State government website tender is at an advanced stage, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Thursday.

The provincial government website development tender, which was reported to be worth R140 million, drew a huge response from the public and industry experts.

The amount was later disputed by Free State officials, who indicated it actually cost R40m.

AfriForum recently announced it would independently investigate the website tender.

AfriForum received copies of the tender documents.

“The exorbitant amounts alone are worrying, and the further one reads through the documents, the clearer it becomes that there are too many discrepancies,” Free State AfriForum organiser Cornelius Els said.

He said the tender was worth R119.6 million, but that the service should not have cost more than a few hundred thousand rand.

On Thursday, Free State premier Ace Magashule said he could not react as the matter was in the hands of the Public Protector. - Sapa
