Bloemfontein - Police in the Free State have reported the discovery of a decapitated and badly mangled body on the outskirts of Bloemfontein.
Provincial police spokesman Captain Chaka Marope said the body of the middleaged man was discovered by a passerby on Sunday afternoon.
“The body was located near the railway line in Gardenia Park. Both legs were broken and found near his body. At this stage it is not clear what led to the decapitation of the man but the police suspect he might have been knocked down by a train.”
In other incidents over the weekend, two pedestrians were killed in what the police suspect to be hitand-run cases. In the first incident, at around five o’ clock on Saturday morning, a 43-year-old man was knocked down, allegedly by a speeding silver BMW at the corner of Zastron Street and Westburger. The victim sustained serious injuries and died on the scene.
According to Marope, the police are looking for the driver of the vehicle as it was reported that he had failed to stop at the scene of the accident.
On the same day, but in the afternoon, another pedestrian died after he was knocked down by a white Toyota Hilux. The accident occurred in Nelson Mandela Avenue in
Westden at around 18:40. The victim sustained serious injuries and died on the scene. The driver of the vehicle also reportedly drove away after the incident.
“Two separate cases of culpable homicide were registered for further investigation,” Marope said.
In another incident, police are investigating the death of a man found lying in a pool of blood next to the railway lines near Majakathata taxi rank in the Central Business District (CBD). The
body was discovered on Sunday morning. The cause of death was unknown as the man, estimated to be in his mid-twenties, had no visible injuries.
