The Free State health department confirmed reports on Tuesday of an accidental baby swap at the Katleho Hospital, in Virginia.
Spokesman Jabu Mbalula said the department united the babies with their real parents within 12 hours, after DNA tests were done.
“Necessary precautionary tests and preventive treatment has been administered to the babies.”
Mbalula said the tests were done to ensure that the babies’ well-being was not compromised.
He said they would suffer no ill effects.
The department had also provided the families with counselling and support.
Internal disciplinary measures had been taken against personnel at the hospital.
Mbalula said the department had revised its measures to prevent a repeat. - Sapa
