Bloemfontein - Free State University rector Jonathan Jansen's term was extended for a further five years, the university announced on Wednesday.

“Prof Jansen's vision for the future of the University of the Free State was in line with that of the council,” said Judge Ian van der Merwe, chairperson of the UFS council.

The decision was taken during the council's meeting earlier this month.

Jansen was appointed as rector on 1 July 2009. His term would be extended for a further five years on 1 July 2014.

Van der Merwe said Jansen led the university successfully through a difficult time.

Jansen's ability to bring people from different backgrounds together has made a huge difference in how the institution was perceived nationally and internationally.

“We are thankful that his services could be maintained for a further term and look forward to working with him,” said Van der Merwe.

Jansen said he was honoured to be granted a second term.

“I will work even harder to advance academic excellence and deepen human relations at this great institution,” he said in a statement.

The council also extended the term of the vice-chairperson of the council, Edward Kieswetter.
