Bloemfontein - A fugitive who evaded police for two years after allegedly committing fraud worth over R400 million appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
“Moketsi Mahoko appeared on charges of corruption and conspiracy to commit fraud,” Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said.
The matter was postponed to July 2 for a formal bail application.
Mahoko was arrested for an alleged conspiracy to defraud the Postbank.
The operation that led to his arrest in Bloemfontein on Monday was conducted by the Hawks' Free State cyber crime unit.
“The arrest was made in conjunction with officers of the crime intelligence division of the police and the Postbank's forensic investigating team,” Ramaloko said.
Mahoko allegedly offered someone a R1.5 million bribe in return for information which would have compromised the Postbank banking system's security.
He was allegedly involved in hacking into the Postbank's system in 2012 and causing a loss of R420m.
Three other men, Boy Thekiso, 30, David Motsoane, 41, and Teboho Masoleng, 40, were caught, convicted and sentenced for their roles in the crime.
Thekiso was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment and Motsoane and Masoleng to 15 years' imprisonment each.
Mahoko had been on the run since 2012, until Monday. Ramaloko said more charges could be formulated against him before his next court appearance.
