Johannesburg - A man has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment by the Ladybrand Regional Court after attempting to rape his sister, police said.
Police spokesperson Martin Xuma said the incident occurred at the sister’s house in Ladybrand in the Free State in May last year.
“The man, 36, arrived at his sister’s place drunk at about 00:40. He knocked on the door and his 22-year-old sister opened the door after she had noticed that it was her brother.”
Xuma said the woman went back to her bedroom after opening the door for him.
“As she was about to climb the bed, the brother pulled her gown down. He unzipped his trouser and tried to rape his sister.”
The 22-year-old victim screamed for help as her brother was trying to rape her, before running away, Xuma said.
“The victim went out to look for him and alerted the neighbours to what had happened. Police were alerted and a case of attempted rape was opened for investigation.”
Xuma said that Detective Constable Tshepo Olebile of the Ladybrand Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit was assigned to investigate the case, and the brother was arrested a few days later and refused bail.
Captain Matebello Motale, the Ladybrand FCS Commander said: “This is an indication that justice does prevail and we encourage community members to report any sexual abuse so that the law can deal with the sexual offenders.”
