Bloemfontein - A man has been arrested after he stabbed his friend to death after a brawl over a loaf of bread, Free State police said.
Police spokesperson Captain Chaka Marope said the deceased, identified only as Mr X Shibane, 29, was found by a passerby in Fort Street at around 9:30pm in Bloemfontein, lying in a pool of blood.
The two were spotted together in the city centre of Bloemfontein engaged in their daily chores of begging on the streets corners, Marope said.
It was alleged that an argument between the two broke out when the deceased refused to share his loaf of bread with his friend, who failed to collect anything for the day.
“As a result the two allegedly wrestled and the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed his friend in his left thigh and thereafter ran away.”
Marope said the two friends had been living on the streets together.
The paramedics were alerted but upon their arrival, they declared Shibane dead as a result of blood loss.
A case of murder has been opened for further investigation.
