Bloemfontein - A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for house breaking and robbery by the Kroonstad regional court, Free State police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said Kekeletso Molsalife had broken into the home of an 18-year-old woman in November 2014.

He overpowered her, undressed her and allegedly planned to rape her, but changed his mind when she offered to give him money instead.

“The suspect agreed and they both walked to the ATM in the CBD. Cash that amounts to R3 000 was withdrawn and taken by the suspect. They walked back to the home of the victim and he cleaned his finger prints in places he touched in the house. He took her cellphone with GPS installed and a camera,” Thakeng said.

The Kroonstad Family Violence and Child Protection Unit investigated the case and arrested Molisalife at his home where they discovered the cellphone and camera hidden in his yard.

Molisalife was acquitted of the attempted rape charge as there was not enough evidence to convict him on that count.

Cluster commander of Kroonstad police station, Brigadier Aphaphia Modise said: “I am very proud of this investigator who ensured that a thorough investigation was conducted which led to this sentence. My appreciation goes to residents who assisted the investigator to trace the suspect and this shows residents are sick and tired of crimes committed against women and children.”
