Bloemfontein - A Bloemfontein man was arrested after he shot and wounded a policeman responding to a domestic dispute call in the Pellisier suburb, Free State police said on Tuesday.

Constable Mathe Sefuthu of the local tactical response team was shot in both legs around 10.30pm on Monday, Captain Chaka Marope said.

He was recovering at the Rosepark hospital.

Police were called to the scene after a neighbour heard a gunshot in the house, in Bakkiesdraai Street. Sefuthu’s unit provided back-up for Parkweg police members who responded.

As police entered the yard and approached the house, a gunman started firing in their direction, hitting Sefuthu in both legs.

A 40-year-old man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, on charges of attempted murder.

Police seized seven hunting rifles and a 9mm pistol belonging to the man. - Sapa
