Johannesburg – A 32-year-old Welkom woman who was arrested on Tuesday for being in possession of gold bearing material and more than R1 million in cash, appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in the Free State on Wednesday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said Lindiwe Skhosana was facing two counts of possession of precious metal (gold) and money laundering.
The charges relate to the acquisition, possession and disposal of unwrought precious metal.
Shuping said Skhosana would be back in court next Wednesday for a bail application after the case was postponed and she was remanded.
Skhosana was arrested after the Directorate for priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) received information that there was a large sum of money, as well as gold bearing material, at a house in a street in Dagbreek.
“When officers arrived at the house they found a woman and upon executing the search warrant, a 50kg of gold bearing material, gold processing equipment as well as R1 082 400 in cash were found in the house,” Hawks spokesperson Captain S’fiso Nyakane said in a statement.
The cash was hidden inside an old geyser next to the house. A vehicle and the cash were subsequently seized.
