Bloemfontein - A 24-year-old soldier appeared in the Fouriesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the killing of two soldiers along the Lesotho border.
Sergeant Majang Skalkie said Mpumelelo Hlubi, 24, faces two counts of murder.
The matter was postponed to March 5 to enable him to obtain a legal representative and for further investigation.
Skalkie said the court might also hear a bail application. Until then, Hlubi would stay in custody.
He allegedly shot dead Lieutenant Thabiso Ernest Seithati, 28, and Gunner Zakhe Nkanyiso Khumalo, 26, while driving from the Fouriesburg Military Base to the Kromdraai temporary base in a military vehicle on Friday.
Hlubi apparently dumped their bodies beside the Kromdraai Farm gravel road.
Police said an R4 rifle and a cellphone were allegedly taken from the two men.
Skalkie said the military vehicle was found abandoned on the Lesoba road. A cellphone was found a few metres from the vehicle. A rifle was also recovered.
Police arrested Hlubi on Saturday and found in his possession an R4 rifle and two magazines. - Sapa
