Bloemfontein -Twenty-nine people were arrested for various offences during Operation Fiela in Bloemfontein, Free State police said on Wednesday.
Brigadier Billy Jones said the 29 were arrested on Tuesday. “Five were arrested for operating a business without valid and proper licences, 22 people were arrested in terms of the immigration act for being undocumented persons, two business owners were arrested for selling counterfeit cigarettes and 20 boxes valued at R10 000 were seized,” he said.
“All the arrested suspects are aged between 24 and 52 [and] were charged and detained at the Parkweg Police Station.”
They were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
“Operation Fiela is aimed at “complementing and enhancing effective deployment efforts by the police stations in the inner city of Bloemfontein to increase police visibility”, Jones said.
He said the operation contributed towards crime prevention and to ensuring that communities feel free and safe.
