Bloemfontein - At least 941 people were arrested for various crimes during Operation Fiela across the Free State, police said on Friday.
“The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, rape, assault, drug related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of firearms and being in the country illegally,” said provincial police spokesman Brigadier Billy Jones.
Firearms and ammunition, stolen livestock, vehicles and drugs such as cocaine, crystal meth and mandrax tablets were confiscated.
He added that the operation was conducted between 1-17 June.
Operational Fiela is a national project by government aimed at eradicating crime and includes the army and the Department of Home Affairs’ immigration services.
