Bloemfontein - Many businesses and homes in Vrede, in the Free State, were without power after a scheduled electricity cut 24-hours ago, power utility Eskom said on Wednesday.

Local Eskom spokeswoman Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg said the scheduled power cut was to repair an old cable and started at 7am on Tuesday.

“After a cable test was done it was found the cable was not up to standard and a new one was installed, which was found to be also defective.”

She said technicians were working non-stop to find the fault.

“It is unsure when the power supply will be back to normal.”

Jansen van Rensburg urged Eskom clients not to interfere with the work done in the town.

Eskom apologised for the inconvenience and said it was doing all it could to restore power.

It said all electrical equipment should be treated as being live, as power could be restored to the town without warning. - Sapa
