Bloemfontein - Police from the Zamdela cluster in Deneysville in the Free State shot and killed an armed robbery suspect, wounded another and arrested a third.
According to police, on Thursday at about 13:00 a man was robbed by three suspects at gunpoint on the R716 as he was on his way to buy cattle for a funeral.
Police spokesperson Constable Josephine Rani said the suspects fled the scene in a silver grey Audi A3.
The victim reported the incident to the Deneysville SAPS who alerted neighbouring police station Viljoensdrif who reacted by blocking entry and exit routes as the suspects were believed to have headed in their have direction.
Police spotted the vehicle and gave chase until the suspects stopped the vehicle in the middle of the R82 and "all three suspects jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at the police while running in to Amelia section".
Police, backed up by Zamdela cluster members who were busy with an operation in the area, retaliated and shot dead one suspect while another was wounded.
"The wounded suspect was pointed out by the community of Amelia where he was hiding and the third suspect was arrested."
Police confiscated two unlicenced 9mm firearms, an undisclosed amount of cash, a Silver Audi A3 and two cellphones. The suspects, aged between 30 and 36, will appear at the Sasolburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges including robbery with a firearm and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
