Bloemfontein - The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has launched an investigation into the Free State health department following several complaints over access to health care services
“The commission's investigation seeks to examine a number of factors, including the availability of health care, financial aspects, human resources, physical infrastructure and equipment, and drugs in the Free State province,” SAHRC spokesman Isaac Mangena said on Wednesday.
“It will further probe specific aspects of access, such as user fees, transport costs, emergency transport, and waiting times, as well as the specific aspects of acceptability in terms of consent, staff attitudes, cultural acceptance, and quality of health care and services for vulnerable groups.”
The investigation comes after the Democratic Alliance lodged a complaint accusing the department of maladministration.
Further allegations were made by the Treatment Acting Campaign (TAC) and social justice group Section 27 about its medicine depot running out of supplies.
“The SAHRC would like to invite role players, including government departments implicated, to make submissions to the SAHRC in response to the allegations,” said Mangena.
